Don't Touch My Hair.
Black Natural Women are often asked the question: Can I touch your hair?
Well the answer is [simple]…
Natural hair has never had a seat at the table full of group think & European beauty standards that shape our society. It’s always been too big & distracting, too rough & tough, too bizarre to wear in public settings. These beauty myths have led to the dehumanization of the black woman, who in her natural state, just wants to be accepted & free.
Some may never understand the beauty & struggle of being natural. We’re able to walk into a room and grab people's attention. Some stare in amazement. Others stare in confusion of how this hair can grow out of our heads in such a way. We should appreciate the stares. It’s an opportunity to highlight & live boldly in the diversity this country brings.
Being natural breaks the barriers of what's acceptable. It is a never ending journey of growth and change. We are able to set examples and motivate all those who fear to rock the abnormal. Natural, in a broader aspect, is a way of life ... Being original. Being US. Being free.
It is beautiful to see so many women accepting their natural roots & others embracing it. For those of you who still do not understand why we embrace our natural, we’re okay with that too.
Maybe one day you will.
So your question was can you touch my hair …
No, you may not ... but you can definitely stare all you’d like.
